This 1881-CC GSA Morgan silver dollar, with its high condition rating, serves as a vivid illustration of how the General Services Administration (GSA) team, who sorted nearly 2.9 million “CC” dollars in the 1970s, experienced confusion at times. The coin is clearly a high-end Uncirculated example, as suggested by the grade NGC assigned it. Yet the GSA holder does not have the word UNCIRCULATED on it. The GSA worker who sorted it must have determined that the arc of toning on the upper reverse periphery was distractive, and henceforth placed it in the “Mixed Carson City” category, whose inventory comprised coins judged to have too many abrasions or too much tarnish (toning) to qualify for the full UNCIRCULATED category.

No matter, because the coin offered here is fully Uncirculated and possesses exquisite eye appeal. It displays only the slightest amount of contact marks, is splendidly lustrous, shows almost all-white surfaces, and is enhanced by the colorful toning on the reverse. A winner hands down.

*Each GSA silver dollar includes a genuine GSA Certificate of Authenticity and a black box.
