The 1892 date is considered one of the more common dates in the Carson City double eagle series. Still, only about 1,050 to 1,300 specimens are estimated to exist in all grades. The attractive PCGS AU-53 piece offered here displays original surfaces that are bathed in an alluring honey-gold color. The details on all the highpoints are boldly defined. Luster radiates from beneath the light “dirty” haze veiling the surfaces. Some owners might be tempted to remove this thin dusting of surface grime expecting to reveal qualities that qualify for a higher grade. This is because the ample luster and sharp details are indicative of at least an AU-55 rating. Purists will insist on leaving this coin’s desirable originality as is. This seems like the wisest choice.
Although contact marks are numerous on the obverse, not any are large or bothersome. Indeed, none are distractive. Several small abrasions on Lady Liberty’s face and neck, on the left field in front of her chin and below star 1, and on the right field behind her head are the only ones worth mentioning. The reverse is much more free of marks than the obverse. Only two tiny (and very shallow) cuts below the motto’s stars (one on the left—extending to the eagle’s wing—and one on the right) are barely noticeable.
CAC readily approved this delightful specimen from the Fairmont Collection.
