This is an extremely rare date in Mint State condition. The obverse displays much brighter surfaces than the image reveals. The sharpness in the detail on all the raised devices is spectacular. You can see every pinpoint feature on every star, and all the strands in Ms. Liberty’s hair flow clearly. Signs of only the lightest circulation-wear are visible, and the obverse fields are peppered with a moderate number of small abrasions. Light hairlines crisscross the surfaces.
The reverse is unquestionably Mint State condition, with all the characteristics you would expect on an MS-63 piece. The details, similar to those seen on the obverse, are boldly defined. The original luster accentuates the exquisite silvery-beige color. Die cracks dart around the peripheral legends, with a long bold one extending from F DOL to the last A in AMERICA. A long thin horizontal scratch is barely visible above the eagle’s left shoulder.
For all you die variety enthusiasts, this example displays the Large “CC,” slanting slightly upward, with wide spacing. The numerous reverse die cracks, and the diagonal die line below Ms. Liberty’s chin are similar to those found on the WB-7 variety.
For those of you who know the rarity of 1872-CC half dollars in high grades, this specimen will excite you.
