This sharply struck example displays only light evidence of use in commercial channels. All details on the raised devices exhibit bold definition. The word LIBERTY on the obverse’s Union shield as well as the horizontal bars at the shield’s top exhibit desirable distinctness. The surfaces are mostly untoned and pleasingly lustrous. Wispy, light hairlines in the fields indicate that this coin received a light dipping in the distant past. Scattered tiny speckles of patina lightly pepper the surfaces in places. The traces of pretty magenta and turquoise toning, mostly around the peripheries on both sides, accentuate this lovely piece’s eye appeal.
The 1870 date is the one for which most examples are available in the Carson City Liberty Seated silver dollar series. Still, we estimate that only approximately 650 to 875 pieces survive in all grades. This is the date most often selected by collectors assembling “CC” coin type sets.
