The 1890 date is considered more a semi-key rather than an outright common issue in the Carson City Morgan silver dollar series. In the GSA group, however, it is considered one of the two keys to completing a 10-piece set.
The PCGS MS-63 specimen offered here, while not necessarily rare in this grade (except if it were in a GSA slab), exudes much character with its mostly all-white surfaces that are accentuated by vibrant dark-cherry and aquamarine peripheral toning. The patina is confined to the obverse’s upper rim and the reverse’s lower edges.
The obverse’s contact marks are fewer in quantity (and degree) than the MS-63 grade suggests. The reverse’s absence of abrasions qualifies it for an MS-65 rating. The boldly struck raised devices on both sides add more appeal to this coin’s attractiveness.
CAC’s approval confirms this piece’s desirability.
