The PCGS census data show more than 200 MS-64 DMPL submission event listings for 1890-CC Morgan silver dollars. In the highest grade DMPL category (MS-65—including Plus sign listings) around 30 events are noted. These numbers suggest that examples of this date in these classifications should be relatively easy to locate. The truth is, however, these recorded submission events exaggerate the available population of MS-64 DMPL and MS-65 DMPL specimens. Not only that, but when the search is narrowed to only premium quality specimens (in either grade), the supply shrinks considerably.
Many 1890-CC silver dollars in MS-64 condition displaying Deep Mirror Prooflike surfaces are noticeably inadequate in appearance. Hazy film plagues average to subpar looking pieces. Unsightly spots or stains prove distractive on some. Numerous contact marks (especially on prime focal points) render many examples unattractive. Simply put, it is difficult to find MS-64 DMPL (and even MS-65 DMPL) specimens displaying impressive eye appeal of which collectors can cherish with pride.
The stunning PCGS MS-64 DMPL coin offered here arguably ranks as the finest known in its grade class. In fact, it is superior in appearance to some MS-65 DMPL examples.
It displays blindingly brilliant all-white surfaces. The contrast between the snow-white raised devices and the mirrored fields creates a cameo effect that is spellbinding. The sharply-struck details on all the highpoints demonstrate a hand-chiseled appearance. Lady Liberty’s face is remarkably clean. The obverse fields are also practically mark-free on most sections. The only hits worth mentioning are several small reed marks on the lower left obverse field to the right of stars 2 – 4. These are what disqualify this handsome piece from an MS-65 rating. A thin diagonal stain-line (possibly as-struck) extends from behind star 1 to behind star 7. This faint streak is only visible when the coin is tilted as just the right angle. The only abrasion on the reverse worth mentioning is a minor scrape on the upper left field above the eagle’s wing to the left of its beak.
The camera failed to capture this specimen’s alluring beauty. Two images (of both obverse and reverse) are displayed above in an attempt to render accurately this coin’s lack of contact marks, its black-and-white contrast, its bold strike, and its overall splendor. However, in the end, all these positive characteristics can only be experienced by an in-hand inspection.
This wonderful CAC-approved specimen will elicit oohs and aahs from all who view it and will bring pride of ownership.
