Increased demand for Carson City coins in recent times has dwindled market supplies. This is especially true for rare date-denominations and even those considered borderline rarities.
The 1892-CC date falls outside the absolute rarity realm occupied by the 1889-CC, 1893-CC, and 1879-CC issues in the Carson City Morgan silver dollar series. However, in higher Mint State grades the 1892-CC date sometimes makes a strong case for rarity status. Specimens in MS-65+ and loftier ratings often prove difficult to find. The MS-64 grouping qualifies as sort of in-between territory. When + (Plus) signs are added the case for scarcity becomes a bit stronger.
The PCGS MS-64+ specimen offered here is not what we consider premium quality for the grade. In fact, it probably rates near the low end of the MS-64+ scale. This is largely due to the weaker definition visible above Lady Liberty’s ear and on the eagle’s breast. A long diagonal thin scratch knifing across Liberty’s face, while not grotesque, is certainly not a positive characteristic.
Positive attributes include all-white surfaces on both sides and a reverse that qualifies for, at minimum, an MS-65+ grade.
CAC’s approval obviously adds value (and assurances for many collectors). Nevertheless, when we see MS-64+ for a “CC” Morgan silver dollar we prefer the coin to unquestionably display just-miss MS-65 quality. The piece offered here does not. In any case, the CAC “green bean” will provide security to most.
