This is the second rarest date in a Carson City Morgan silver dollar set. Collectors seeking examples in grades up to AU-50 usually do not encounter much difficulty in locating a piece. In the higher Mint State realm, ranging from MS-64 and above, costs begin rising significantly the higher up the ladder one ascends. The AU-58 division is extremely popular with collectors desiring pleasing looking specimens at the highest end of the circulated sphere.

The PCGS AU-58 example offered here displays the appearance of a Mint State coin, with just the slightest traces of evidence that it spent a very brief time in commerce. This time was possibly confined to bank-to-bank exchanges. One of the most desirable features on this piece is the bold detail on all the raised devices. This is especially noticeable on the areas that often show weakness, like the hair above Lady Liberty’s ear and on the eagle’s breast. The radiant surfaces are essentially all-white on both sides. A minor blush of auburn color is barely visible on locks of Liberty’s hair just below the inner portion of the bottom of her cap. On the reverse a similar colored tint (blended with light maroon) encircles the periphery, mostly around the very top and rotating to the left side.

Minor contact marks are scattered across both the obverse and reverse. They are equivalent in quantity to the number seen on many MS-61 specimens of this date. None are detractive.

Overall, this coin displays exceptional eye appeal for its grade. It will add much value to any set of “CC” Morgan dollars ranging in grade from AU-55 to MS-64.
