Thanksgiving is finally here and that means it’s time for the holiday season to begin. This is my favorite time of the year. It’s all about food, fun, family, and togetherness. At Southgate Coins, we believe that holidays give us a reason to go all-out and celebrate, and this coming holiday season is no exception. Maya, Crystal, and I (Cara) spent all morning this past Saturday, 11/22/08, turning Southgate Coins into a holiday wonderland, with a 3-foot-tall Santa, garland around the windows, some stockings, wreaths, bells, and even a full 7-foot Christmas tree with “snow” around the bottom. November 21, 2008. Most people know it as a date. Others may even know that it was a Friday. But, we at Southgate Coins, will forever know it as "a wild, crazy, and exciting day." It all started as a memo on our calendar that told us we would be celebrating Brittany’s Birthday, as well as be welcoming C4OA members for a mini-regional meeting. The day quickly turned from a marked date on the calendar to an actual event-filled affair. There were many smiling and happy people hanging around the store talking about their favorite subjects (mostly coins!); there were huge birthday balloons on display, and there was one sweet chocolate cake waiting to be presented. Rape: Excluding homicide, physical rape is considered one of the most devastating crimes perpetrated on its victims. Whether it be the a daughter coming home late from a date or an unescorted woman leaving work at night, the fear of sexual assault can be very real. Some would define physical rape as the ultimate act of savagery against a female. Why? Because it’s the ultimate violation of a person's freedom.

As the next rainstorm of the season rolls into Reno, it’s once again time to celebrate Halloween at Southgate Coins. We decorated the store and put out the candy dish, but what really got all of the staff into the Halloween spirit were the costumes we adorned ourselves with for the occasion. Walking into the store on Friday morning, you would’ve been greeted by an assortment of characters. Brittany was “Bobbie the Builder,” Crystal was a swashbuckling pirate, Maya turned into a purple fairy princess, Marie and I (Cara) were both cute 1920’s flapper girls, and Rusty had transformed himself into “Buffalo Bill.” There was an assortment of accessories that came along with our costumes as well, like Rusty’s Colt Walker-44 replica gun and his authentic Winchester rifle, Crystal’s sword and rubber-band gun, and Maya’s lovely light-up star wand (complete with whimsical melody). Some of you might be aware that Thursday, October 16 was National Boss Day. It’s a day Hallmark invented to sell more greeting cards, just like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s day.;} just kidding. Honestly, it’s a day where we, the Southgate employees, like to give a little thanks in recognition of all that Rusty and Marie do for us. And the crazy thing is, they didn’t even remember the day that gives thanks to them.

All of the Southgate girls attend the University of Nevada, Reno, and as of August 25, 2008, we hit the ground running as we started the Fall 2008 semester.
