Somer speaks on the Carson City Mint's Annual Coin Show and what perks exist in small packages.
A Small Package Spectacle
By Somer Athari
Some of you may or may not know that the Nevada State Museum, better known as the good 'ol Carson City Mint is having its annual coin show next weekend. Just as it seemed the storm of coin shows had finally calmed down, here comes yet another coin show which is pertinent for the Southgate Crew to attend. This is our favorite show to be present at, for obvious reasons that we love Carson City coins! This show is us in our element. Naturally, the whole Southgate Crew will be there, ready to show some of the most impressive "CC" minted coins available.
The ANA and San Francisco in general were very impressive in all their grandeur, but there is a reason why people say that good things often come in small packages, and this Carson City coin show can certainly be described as such. What better place to have a coin show than that in the very mint where so many of the coins on display were birthed. There sure is something timeless about the whole experience, as if nothing has changed in 150 years.
The small package, which makes up Northern Nevada, has been my home for over 5 years and the growth is not quite comparable to the growth happening in Southern Nevada, a.k.a. Las Vegas, however I consider it to be in the same league. In fact, people from all over the country are finding a home here in these small clusters of cities, according to a Forbes Magazine article on the MSN home page last week. Reno, NV makes the top ten places to live in the U S. by a hair, at number 9. Due to this mass of people migrating to the area, the Carson, Tahoe, Reno region has been in complete construction, renovation, and restoration since I have been a resident. In truth, all aspects of this area are under construction including all roads, historic buildings like the Carson City Mint; even recreational sites all over the area have been made more user friendly.
Reno's nickname has and always will be "The Biggest Little City in the World," no matter how many people decide to reside in this well kept secret located in the high sierras, because of the Wild West history and traditional feel of these communities. Carson City, which was only a mining town at the time of the mid 1800s, may have never become what it is today, without this short lived mint. Carson City and all of Nevada now had a voice, something special, something unique, unlike the other gold rush mining camps in the area. That's what makes this Carson City Mint coin show so special and that's why we take extra pride in this very unique coin show. I think it could be compared to some of the most unique coins in existence, like the 1873-CC No Arrows dime, but that's just because that dime is the only Unique coin I have ever taken a picture with.
