Carson City Coin Show

This time of the year seems to drag on and on due to the hot summer heat, the constant threat of wildfires, and of course preparing for those end-of-summer events and festivities. But you know the dog days of summer don’t have us down here at Southgate!

Weekly Update

Well, well! It has been quite a busy past few weeks here at Southgate! As Amy mentioned in the previous weblog, spring cleaning is underway here at the store. You see, during the winter months, the girls at the store usually only work part-time schedules due to the fact that they attend college also. With that, we don’t have quite the regular cleaning crew that we do during the summertime when school is out. All the tidying-up and organization gets a little behind during those colder months because of this, but finally the cleaning crew is getting back on track. That means Amy and I have a full load of work to do this summer! So much for keeping those pretty manicured fingernails...

Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day Everyone!

Here’s a little food for thought for you this morning- It is rumored that the very first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Washington after a daughter requested to honor her father who was widowed at an early age and was left to raise his six children alone. It wasn't until 1966 however when President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed Fathers' Day a national holiday which was to be celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June.

A Birthday to Remember

Well, well, well... This past Friday was most definitely a wonderful occasion here at Southgate Coins. Why, you ask? Because it was my birthday celebration - why else?! To be honest, I actually turned 19 on the 19th; but coincidentally that was one of the few Saturdays a year that Southgate was closed for inventory! What is a girl to do?

Mother's Day

Here’s wishing everyone a very happy and safe Mother’s Day weekend!

We here at the store have a lot to thank our moms for. I for one know that I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for my charming mom. And of course this holiday is one of the “big ones” because not only do we hold the special ladies in our own lives up on this day but we also all hold up our resident mother, who we have appropriately named "Mother Theresa" (aka Marie for those of you who don’t know) very close to our hearts. She is hands down the brightest star in our work day. I cannot put into words how much Marie means not only to me but to the other staffers as well. She definitely does not get as much credit and praise as she should considering all that she does for our store and our staff. She is the first one here in the morning and works tirelessly throughout the day managing the staff, the customers, the store maintenance, and all the other pieces to the puzzle. I for one do not know how she manages to get everything done along with dealing with all the pressures that come with running a business and still have such a beautiful and loving heart. Marie I love you so much and can’t thank you enough for the opportunity that you and Rusty gave to me when you hired me many moons ago. You mean the world to all of us. So with this I say, Happiest Mother’s Day, Mother Theresa!--Amy

Country Music

One of the many perks about living in Reno is being able to attend a lot of special events and concerts that come into the casinos and downtown events center. As some of you already know, before I moved to Reno, I lived in a small town in Southern California and in order to attend music concerts and plays we had to literally travel to and from Los Angeles which took four hours each way. Last night I attended yet another country music concert at one of the local casinos and instead of the eight hour round trip drive, it only took, drum roll please, ten minutes round trip! That’s better I would say!

I am sure you are wondering what singers we went to see this time and rest assured you won’t have to wait any longer.

Last night I saw live in concert Jason Michael Carroll who has a very big name but he is a very small man. He is an up and coming artist in the country music world but right now you can hear his song, "Alyssa Lies" playing all over the radio. And of course the front runner for the night was the very talented Gary Allan who of course has many hit songs out there in radio land but my favorite song from him is hands down "Life Ain’t Always Beautiful."

Like I said, just another perk about living in Reno... saving on gas.
