In spite of an obnoxiously busy day with tons of customers, the Southgate Coins crew has successfully pulled off yet another birthday. This time, it was for our “kingly” boss, Rusty Goe.
As always, pulling off a birthday celebration requires a certain sort of “undercover finesse” around the workplace. This year was no exception. With a fairly large birthday cake, and a really big birthday present, we all had our day cut out trying to hide everything from Rusty. Not to mention preparing this weblog (pictures and all) behind the scenes. Read on for more details on Rusty’s birthday gala.
The only girl that wasn’t scheduled to work during the celebration was Dixie, but her being off ended up working out to our advantage. This was because Dixie was actually our little undercover agent for the day; she slyly picked up Rusty’s special birthday lunch from Rositas Mexican Restaurant, snuck it all into the store with perfect timing, and Rusty never even knew. Rusty was pleasantly surprised as we all shouted “Happy Birthday” when he walked into our conference office, because Cara was having “problems” with her workstation located there.
Lunch was spectacular as always, and after some great conversations, Rusty was then surprised with chocolate-chocolate chip bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes, topped off with sweet cream cheese icing.
As we all know, the Southgate Coins crew are experts at surprises, so of course us girls had one last surprise for our “King of the Day.” The ultimate birthday present for his kingdom (aka office)!
For Rusty’s present this year, us girls decided to once again go the useful route and we purchased a brand new, black leather office chair for him. Rusty’s poor old chair had been around ever since Southgate Coins opened nine years ago. The old chair saw thousands of hours of use, made evident by the holes in the armrests and odd side-to-side, unbalanced movement that happened whenever someone sat in it. The sad state of Rusty’s old chair was what lead the girls to decide that the best present for Rusty’s birthday would be a new “throne” for his “cave”.
One afternoon, about two weeks ago, Maya and I (Cara) went to Office Depot and picked out a gorgeous black leather office chair. I hid the chair at my house and with my handywoman skills, I assembled it the morning of Rusty’s birthday. I snuck the chair into the store and hid it in the back, hoping Rusty wouldn’t see. To top off the gift, Nicole brought in a big red bow to put on the chair, as well as a silly “getting older” card, haha.
When Rusty saw his present, he was quite surprised and delighted. He let all the girls take a turn sitting in it to feel how comfortable it was. Overall, it was another successful and useful gift idea from the girls!
I (Nicole), am always honored to be apart of Southgate Coin’s various celebrations, and although the ill-timed sudden rush of customers in the heart of Rusty’s surprise, we were all still able to have a great time, with fun stories and memories to share for future girls.
Well Rusty, we all hope you had yet another enjoyable birthday, with good food, treats, and gifts! “Long Live the King!”
-Maya, Cara, and Nicole
